Educational Option

Here's another great San Diego City Schools option.

The Charter School of San Diego . . .

  • Serves students in grades 7 through 12.
  • Is a choice designed to accelerate or "catch-up"; a credit-driven program.
  • Is a public school and charges NO tuition.
  • Is fully accredited and meets all California state standards governing charter schools.
  • Offers safe, personalized, small group settings in most communities.
  • May be found in a neighborhood near you.

Most students in California attend what is known as a traditional high school. These schools are located on campuses with enrollments as high as 3500 students.

An Educational Option

The Charter School of San Diego (CSSD) is an educational option for students in grades 7-12. It is not a traditional school. Its instructional design is based on a "University Model." Students work independently and attend classes, labs, or tutorials two-to-five times per week. Community classrooms may be found in most neighborhoods. To meet the needs of the community, sites are small settings with enrollments of 40 to 160 students. Classrooms may operate between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Students come at scheduled times so that there are never more than 20 students on site at one time.

Positive Student Outcomes

CSSD is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It is good in good standing with its granting district and has documentation demonstrating exceptionally positive student outcomes. Student work is governed by a course syllabus consistent with the standards prescribed by the San Diego Unified School District and the California State Department of Education. The course syllabus consists of lessons developed to meet student needs and course requirements. Study is supported by lesson guides developed by The Charter School of San Diego teachers.

Students take one to two courses at a time. By concentrating on one to two subjects, students are able to better focus on content. Students are expected to complete a minimum of one course every three weeks. Classes operate around the year. Students may work continuously on course work. They are not restricted to semester timetables or limited by summer school. CSSD is in operation 12 months of the year. Teachers teach across the curriculum.

CSSD is designed to serve a wide range of student needs:

  • Over 10% of the students are identified Gifted and Talented (GATE).
  • 8% of eligible students are concurrently enrolled in community college.
  • Students wishing to "catch-up" receive special assistance.

CSSD is an option for students who need something different!
