Position Descriptions

Teacher

CSSD is an educational option for students in grades 7-12. Its instructional design is based on a "University Model". Students work independently and attend classes, labs, or tutorial two-to-five times a week. Students come at scheduled times; there are never more than 20 students on site at one time. The course of study is approved by SD City Schools, and is based on the California State Framework.

CSSD is seeking competent, energetic, student-centered educators with good classroom management and organizational skills, who understand adolescents, are able to motivate students, set high expectations, welcome accountability, and are good team players.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have the outstanding ability to engage and motivate students toward success; knowledge and experience with curriculum and teaching strategies; ability to facilitate learning and develop individualized education plans; counseling and facilitation skills; thrive on challenge, autonomy, and accountability; excellent organization, time management, and record keeping skills; experience with special student populations: at risk, gifted, learning handicapped, ESL, etc.; be creative and resourceful; possess computer skills; the ability to administer the complex operation of a storefront classroom. Math, Science and Technology skills are in great demand, but applicants in all subject areas are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications include CA single- or multi-subject credential or eligible for individualized intern credential (BA?BS degree, CBEST, enrolled in a credential program, subject matter qualified by test or coursework), experience teaching or counseling 7th-12th grade students. Valid California driver license and transportation required.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Improve each student's ability to read, write, compute, speak, and problem solve; monitor and document this progress through a variety of assessment techniques.
  • Implement the educational program required of CSSD.
  • Upon completion of the personal education plan assessment, undertake those activities that result in the student achieving his/her academic and career goals.
  • Create and maintain a community outreach effort to engage students, parents/guardians, residents, feed school communities, counselors, health and social service providers, neighborhood businesses, partnerships and alliances, and community based organizations. This active engagement will be achieved by documented home, school, and community visitation, telephone calls, personal conferences, letters, etc.
  • Select, orient, provide leadership and supervise assistants and volunteers.
  • Maintain compliance with classroom budgets, including expenses and student work product, protect and account for classroom assets.
  • Perform accurate and timely accounting of student activities, i.e., master agreements, course contracts, continuums, portfolios, credit reports, contact logs, intervention sheets, and other documents deemed necessary for compliance.
  • Demonstrate evidence of team building, collaboration, creative problem solving, flexibility, conflict resolution, cultural sensitivity, and genuine care for each student.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Salary Information

Successful candidates begin with an hourly contract during the introductory period (1000 hours). Upon successful completion of the introductory period, employee will placed on the CSSD teacher salary schedule reflecting their education and experience (consistent with San Diego City School district salary practices) and receive district benefits package. CSSD school year is from July 1 to June 30. Teachers are contracted for 12-month/231 contract days. Successful candidates will become employees of The Charter School of San Diego.


Learning Associate

The Learning Associate position is an especially designed career path that assists the CSSD in supporting the development of their future teachers. (This is not a TA position.) There is an emphasis on the fostering of highly professional skills that support excellence in teaching. Math, Science and Technology skills are in great demand, but applicants in all subject areas are encouraged to apply.

Under the guidance and leadership of a CSSD administrator or designee, skilled professionals are needed to engage and motivate students. The successful candidate provides instruction in all core subjects for students in grades 7-12 and assist in operation of the storefront classroom. The successful candidate must possess a relevant college degree, pass the CBEST, be enrolled in a teacher education program, and have experience working with secondary and special student populations. They must be creative and resourceful, have computer, organizational, time, and record keeping skills. Valid California driver license and transportation are required.

Under the supervision of a CSSD administrator or designee, the responsibilities are similar to above. The Learning Associates will have a smaller roster of students and less involvement in department and site tasks.

Classroom Assistant

Under the direct supervision of the teacher, the successful candidate will assist in the academic program of 7th-12th grade students, and assist in the operations of the storefront classroom. CSSD classroom assistants are a key part of the CSSD team of education professionals. They are role models for our students, and are expected to look, act, and speak, as a representative of CSSD at all times. Duties may include tutoring, clerical support, telephone calling, and assisting teachers with home visits.

Qualifications/Requirements

The successful candidate must
  • be a graduate or be enrolled in an accredited college or university as a full time student.
  • if candidate is not a college graduate, be able to show proof of satisfactory completion of at least 12 units of coursework between July 1 and June 30 each school year (for continued employment)
  • possess a valid California driver license and have reliable transportation.
  • possess excellent organization, time, and record keeping skills.
  • preferably have experience working with secondary and special student populations.
Assignment Information

All positions are part-time hourly. Most positions are 25 hours per week, however there may be several 12.5 hours positions. Assignments vary according to site needs and staffing allocation.
